The 2016 BMW 340I is powered by the 3.0L B58B30M0 A engine, the turbocharged inline-six that currently anchors BMW's lineup. The B58 has earned a reputation as one of the best modern engines BMW has built, with strong torque, smooth power delivery, and a track record of reliability. In the M340i and X3 M40i it makes serious power while staying refined enough for daily duty.

Like all modern BMW engines, the B58 is turbocharged and direct injected, with a gasoline particulate filter that requires low-SAPS oil. BMW's spec for this engine is a 0W-20 full synthetic, and the engine management system is picky about it.
