ABS Module and Brake Line Corrosion

On older F-150s especially those driven in states that use road salt two brake-related problems are common enough that every owner should know about them. ABS module failures and corroded brake lines.

ABS Module Failure

The ABS module on F-150s from the early 2000s through the mid 2010s is known to fail. The failure usually starts with the ABS light and traction control light coming on. Sometimes the speedometer stops working or the transmission shifting becomes erratic because the PCM loses vehicle speed data.

The common cause is a failed solder joint inside the ABS module. The module is mounted on the pump unit and is exposed to heat cycles that eventually crack the solder connections. Some owners have had success repairing the module by resoldering the connections. Replacement modules from the dealer are expensive often $500 to $800 for the part alone.

Several companies offer rebuilt ABS modules for $150 to $300 that come with a warranty. This is the most cost-effective option for most owners.

Brake Line Corrosion

Brake line rust is a safety issue that affects every vehicle in salt belt states. The steel brake lines run along the frame and are exposed to road salt and moisture. Over time they corrode from the outside in. A brake line failure means sudden loss of braking pressure.

On the F-150 the lines that run to the rear wheels are the most vulnerable. Inspect them periodically especially if you live in a state that salts roads. Surface rust is normal but if you see flaking rust or bulging spots replacement is needed.

Replacing brake lines is labor-intensive but the parts themselves are cheap. Many owners replace all the steel lines with nickel-copper alloy lines that resist corrosion much better. This is a popular upgrade that solves the problem permanently.
