How Far Between Oil Changes on an F-150

There are strong opinions about oil change intervals and everyone has one. Some people change oil every 3,000 miles because that is what their dad taught them. Others follow the Ford recommended interval and go 7,500 or 10,000 miles between changes. And some owners running AMSOIL Signature Series go 25,000 miles or one year between changes. So who is right?

It Depends on How You Drive

Ford divides driving into two categories. Normal service includes mostly highway driving with moderate temperatures and light loads. Severe service includes towing, off-roading, frequent short trips, extreme temperatures, and stop-and-go traffic. Most F-150 owners fall into severe service whether they realize it or not.

An extended oil change interval requires an extended life oil filter. The AMSOIL EA nano fiber filter is rated for 25,000 miles and traps particles down to 20 microns. Using a standard filter with extended oil intervals is asking for trouble because the filter can clog or go into bypass mode forcing unfiltered oil through your engine.

My Recommendation

If you are running a quality PAO-based synthetic like AMSOIL Signature Series 10,000 miles is a safe conservative interval for mixed driving on a modern F-150. If you tow heavily or drive in severe conditions often 7,500 miles. If you drive mostly highway with light loads and use a lab to confirm oil condition you can push toward 15,000 or 20,000 miles with confidence.

For conventional oil or weaker synthetics 5,000 miles is a reasonable safe interval for mixed driving and 3,000 to 4,000 if you tow. The EcoBoost engines are harder on oil than naturally aspirated engines so err on the shorter side.
