Rocker Panel Rust on 2004-2014 F-150s

If you own a 2004 to 2014 F-150 and live anywhere that gets snow you have probably seen rust starting on the rocker panels or cab corners. This is the most common body issue on these trucks and it is almost impossible to stop once it starts.

Why These Years Rust

The 2004-2014 F-150 body design has several areas where moisture and salt get trapped. The rocker panels are boxed sections with limited drainage. Over time the inside of the rocker collects dirt and moisture and rust starts from the inside out. By the time you see bubbles on the outside paint the metal underneath is already compromised.

The cab corners where the rear of the cab meets the bed are another trouble spot. The body seam there traps moisture and the paint tends to fail at the seam edge allowing rust to get a foothold.

Repair Options

If the rust is caught early while it is still just surface rust sanding and painting can stop it. Once the metal is perforated through replacement panels are needed. Aftermarket rocker panels and cab corners are available for these trucks and many body shops have experience doing this repair.

Full rocker panel replacement typically runs $800 to $1,500 per side depending on labor rates and whether you need paint matching. Cab corner replacement is usually $400 to $800 per side. If both sides and both cab corners need work expect $3,000 or more for a complete repair.

Prevention

The only real prevention is keeping the truck away from road salt. That is not practical for most people but you can slow the process. Wash the underbody regularly during winter months including inside the rocker panels if you have access to a pressure washer with an underbody attachment.

Some owners have had success with fluid film or wool wax type rust preventatives sprayed inside the rocker panels and cab corners. These products creep into seams and displace moisture. They need to be reapplied annually but they do slow rust progression significantly.

Bottom Line

Rocker panel rust on 2004-2014 F-150s is a fact of life for owners in salt states. It does not affect how the truck drives but it does affect how it looks and how long the body lasts. If you are looking at buying one of these trucks inspect the rockers and cab corners carefully because rust in these areas is expensive to fix properly.
