Why the 3.8L Uses Oil

The 3.8L V6 used in JK Wranglers from 2007 to 2011 is known for higher-than-normal oil consumption. This is largely a design characteristic. The engine was originally designed for front-wheel drive minivans and was adapted for the Wrangler. It uses a cast iron block with aluminum heads, and the piston ring design allows more oil to slip past than modern engines. Chrysler considered consumption of up to one quart every 1,000 miles to be within specification for this engine.

Oil consumption on the 3.8L tends to get worse as mileage accumulates. The PCV system is a common contributor. How to Reduce Oil Consumption

Next, switch to a high-quality 5W-30 or 10W-30 synthetic oil. Many 3.8L owners report dropping from a quart every 800 miles to a quart every 1,500 miles just by switching to synthetic oil.
