Alternator Failure on Jeep Wranglers — Diagnosis and Replacement

Signs of Alternator Failure

The most obvious sign of a failing alternator is the battery warning light on the dashboard. This light comes on when the voltage drops below about 12.5 volts while the engine is running. Other symptoms include dim headlights that brighten when you rev the engine, slow cranking when starting even with a good battery, and a whining noise from the alternator area. Electrical accessories may work erratically or not at all.

A failing alternator can cause the engine to stall because modern engine computers need a stable voltage supply. If the voltage drops too low, the fuel injectors may not open properly and the ignition system may not produce enough spark. This is more likely to happen at idle when the alternator is turning slowly and producing its least output.

Diagnosing the Problem

Check the alternator output voltage with a multimeter at the battery terminals with the engine running. A healthy alternator should produce 13.8 to 14.5 volts at idle with no accessories on. If the voltage is below 13.0 volts, the alternator is not charging properly. Check the voltage at the alternator output terminal itself — if there is voltage at the alternator but not at the battery, the wiring between them has a problem.

Check the alternator belt tension. A loose belt will slip and prevent the alternator from producing full output. The serpentine belt should have about half an inch of deflection at the longest span between pulleys. A glazed or cracked belt should be replaced. Check the alternator connections for corrosion or looseness. A bad connection at the main power wire can cause intermittent charging.

Replacement Options

A stock replacement alternator is adequate for a Wrangler with no additional electrical loads. For Wranglers with winches, auxiliary lights, and other accessories, a high-output alternator rated at 160 to 200 amps provides the additional capacity needed to keep the battery charged with all accessories running. A high-output alternator is a worthwhile upgrade if you regularly run a winch or have multiple auxiliary electrical loads.

When replacing the alternator, consider upgrading to a higher-output model even if you do not currently have accessories. The additional capacity provides a safety margin and future-proofs the electrical system. The cost difference between a factory replacement alternator and a high-output unit is about $50 to $100.

Bottom Line

Diagnose alternator failure by checking battery voltage with the engine running. Output should be 13.8 to 14.5 volts. If the alternator is failing, replace it with a high-output unit if you run a winch or have auxiliary lights. Check the belt and wiring connections before assuming the alternator itself is bad.
