Supercharging the 3.6L Pentastar in Your Wrangler

What a Supercharger Does

A supercharger forces more air into the engine than it can draw on its own. More air means more fuel can be burned, which means more power. The Pentastar responds well to forced induction because its aluminum block and forged crankshaft are strong enough to handle the additional stress. A centrifugal supercharger kit typically adds 100 to 130 horsepower to the 3.6L Pentastar, bringing the total to around 390 to 420 horsepower at the crank.

The supercharger is driven by the engine's serpentine belt, so power is available immediately at any RPM. There is no turbo lag. This makes a supercharged Pentastar feel strong from idle to redline. The power delivery is smooth and linear, which is important for off-road control. Most kits run at 6 to 8 pounds of boost on pump gas, which is a safe level for the Pentastar's compression ratio.

What the Kit Includes

A complete supercharger kit for the Pentastar includes the supercharger head unit, mounting bracket, intake tubing, intercooler, fuel injectors, and a custom engine calibration. The calibration is the most critical part — it tells the engine computer how to add fuel and adjust timing for the increased airflow. A bad calibration can destroy the engine quickly. Stick with reputable kits from known manufacturers like RIPP Superchargers or Magnuson that include a proper calibration.

Most kits require upgrading the fuel injectors to handle the additional fuel demand. The factory injectors run out of capacity at about 450 horsepower. Many kits also include a larger heat exchanger for the intercooling system to keep intake air temperatures under control. Some kits include a serpentine belt with a shorter routing to drive the supercharger.

Supporting Modifications

A supercharged Pentastar generates more heat than a naturally aspirated engine. An upgraded radiator and oil cooler are recommended if you plan to use the power for more than short bursts. The cooling system on the JK is marginal even for the stock engine, and forced induction pushes it past the limit. An aftermarket aluminum radiator with dual fans is a good investment before or at the same time as the supercharger.

The transmission is another consideration. The automatic transmission in JK Wranglers (the 42RLE or NAG1) is not designed for the additional torque of a supercharged engine. A transmission cooler is essential, and a torque converter upgrade is recommended. For manual transmissions, the clutch will need to be upgraded to handle the additional power. The stock clutch will slip under boost.

Bottom Line

Supercharging your Pentastar Wrangler adds serious power — 100 to 130 horsepower from a quality kit. Use a reputable kit with a proper calibration, upgrade the cooling system, and plan for transmission upgrades. A supercharged Pentastar JK or JL is a different animal from stock in the best possible way.
