TIPM Failure in Jeep Wranglers — What It Is and How to Handle It

What the TIPM Does

The Totally Integrated Power Module is the main fuse box and relay center on JK Wranglers. It controls power distribution to almost every electrical component — fuel pump, starter, headlights, wipers, horn, air conditioning, and more. The TIPM is located under the hood on the driver's side. It combines the functions of a traditional fuse box with solid-state relay control. When the TIPM fails, it can affect any or all of the systems it controls.

The TIPM on JK Wranglers has known reliability issues. The internal relays can fail, causing intermittent operation or complete failure of the components they control. The most common failure is the fuel pump relay, which can stop working and leave the vehicle unable to start. The TIPM issues affect 2007 through 2018 JK Wranglers, with the 2007 to 2012 models being most prone to failure.

Common Failure Symptoms

The most common TIPM failure symptom is the fuel pump relay stopping working. The engine cranks but does not start because the fuel pump is not receiving power. This can be intermittent initially — the vehicle starts sometimes but not others — then becomes permanent. Other common symptoms include windshield wipers that operate at the wrong speed or continue running when turned off, headlights that do not work on certain settings, and the horn not working.

Multiple seemingly unrelated electrical problems at the same time are a strong indicator of TIPM failure. For example, if the wipers are acting up and the horn does not work and the radio loses power intermittently, the common cause is the TIPM. Diagnosing TIPM failure requires checking for power at the output of the TIPM for the affected circuits.

Replacement Options

A new TIPM from the dealer costs about $800 to $1,200 and requires programming by the dealer to match your vehicle's options. A remanufactured TIPM from a specialized rebuilder costs about $300 to $500 and comes pre-programmed. The rebuilders repair the known failure points and test the unit before shipping. This is the most cost-effective option for most owners.

As an alternative to TIPM replacement, some owners add an external bypass harness for the fuel pump relay. This bypasses the TIPM's internal fuel pump relay with an external relay that is more reliable. The bypass harness costs about $50 and can be installed in about an hour. This is a good temporary fix but does not address other potential TIPM failures.
