Track Bar Upgrade for Jeep Wranglers — Why It Matters

What the Track Bar Does

The track bar connects the frame to the axle and prevents the axle from moving side to side relative to the vehicle. Without a track bar, the axle would shift left and right as the suspension compresses, which would make the vehicle impossible to steer predictably. The track bar is one of the most important safety-related components in the front suspension, and it is the number one component involved in death wobble.

When a Wrangler is lifted, the distance between the frame-side and axle-side track bar mounts changes. The factory track bar is not adjustable, so it cannot center the axle after a lift. This causes the axle to be offset to one side, which makes the vehicle pull to one side and accelerates tire wear. An adjustable track bar solves this by allowing you to set the axle position correctly for any lift height.

Signs Your Track Bar Needs Attention

The most obvious sign of a worn track bar is death wobble — the violent front axle oscillation that occurs at highway speeds. Before it reaches that point, you may notice the vehicle wandering at highway speeds, requiring constant steering corrections. You may also notice that the front tires are not centered in the wheel openings after a lift. A loose track bar can cause a clunking noise from the front end when going over bumps.

Inspect the track bar by having someone turn the steering wheel while you watch the frame-side and axle-side mounts. Any movement at the bolt or bushing is a problem. Check the frame-side bolt hole for elongation — this is a common issue on JK Wranglers where the bolt hole wears into an oval shape. If the hole is elongated, a new track bar will not fix the problem without also installing a reinforcement bracket.

Choosing an Adjustable Track Bar

An adjustable track bar is one of the first upgrades you should make when lifting a Wrangler. Look for one with heavy-duty heim joints or polyurethane bushings at each end. The bar should be made of solid steel or DOM tubing, not thin-walled tubing. The frame-side bracket should be reinforced to prevent the bolt hole elongation issue. Installation is straightforward. Remove the factory track bar, measure the distance between the mounts, and set the adjustable track bar to the same length. Install the new bar, then adjust the length until the axle is centered under the vehicle. Measure from the frame rail to the tire on each side at the same height — the measurements should be equal.
